The downtown

The actual downtown stands around the main street. At the top there is the Church of S Maria del Rosario, while in the middle you can find the church of Saint Giuseppe (Joseph) that stands in the main square. The little place called Filianello is a quarter of Filiano and it is connected to my village by the public city park and the sport facilities. Recently in Filianello, were bult many new buildings after the terrible earthquake that hit Basilicata in 1980.

Church of  S. Giuseppe

In 1830 a little chapel already existed in the place where now The church of Saint Joseph stands. The people who were going to follow the religoius ceremony, pushed by the priest began to bring "a stone" each one in order to build up a new bigger church. Finnally in 1885 the actual church was built. The Big ben was built in 1930 thanks to the money offered by the people and to the money given by Prince Filippo Andrea Doria Pamphili , lord of Lagopesole.

"Sagra del Formaggio"= cheese feast

The name of Filiano come from the wealth of wool which women spin (it italian filare), thanks to the richness of flock that ate in the hills in the sorroundings. The milk produced is still today of a very high quality. The milk made in Filiano nowadays is particolar: rich of Vitanmis, parfumed and fat and it becomes a very tasty cheese.Once a year it takes place the Feast of the cheese, whose name is "pecorino" as it comes out from the milk of the sheep (in italian pecora). Sagra del Pecorino"is a big party (it is in the 1st week pf September),where the visitors can taste and buy the Pecorino of Filiano straightly just from the producers. During the Sagra del Pecorino, the streets are very crowded.( For further information you can contact the town hall, Comune di Filiano : +39-971-836010 )

Filiano let you feel a pleasant close contact with the nature. In Particular although there are many paths to do in the sorrounding we suggest you  to walk just outside the center until the Villa comunale especially visited by the little children and the dogs.

The most succesful feast

Lu'Muzzic': That is "the day of the reaper ". It is a successful event. In the downtown they organizes a sort of open air market with stands where you can taste the typical dishes traditionally eaten by the farmers of Filiano . These people usually spent the whole day in the field from sunrise to sunset working very hard, and they usually ate exactly what the unhabitants of Filiano cook and prepare and serve dressed in their folk traditional dresses. In particular there are delicious "orecchiette " in red souce, the "Ciambotta", a vetetable tasteful soup,  then another dish is a kind of  omelette with herbs and finally there is a light sweet round biscuit . Everything is offeret with a piece of good salty bread and a glass of "Aglianico" wine typical of this zone(you risk to be drunk at the end of the path!!). Last time of Lu'Muzzic has been on the 19th of August. 400 people bought the ticket to taste all the specialities
